Putting an end to bad design

MISSISSAUGA, Ont.—An interesting article in the summer issue of technology magazine Backbone discusses the importance of good design.

While the article (“Failure by design”) mainly addresses the highlights and lowlights of certain industrial design products, it touches on the significance of usability in design and its importance in everyday life.

Is it the men's room or a handicap washroom or both? An example of bad design

“I think that in a lot of products — and obviously in the software and computer technology fields as well — there’s a disconnect between the engineer, the technologists and the designer,” says Sir James Dyson, of Dyson vacuum fame. “Usability can drive technology forward, and vice versa.”

The article also discusses the prevalence of bad design. For a list of examples go to www.baddesigns.com Contact: www.backbonemag.com/magazine
