Subplot creates Okanagan brand platform
VANCOUVER—Okanagan Spring Brewery’s stale look has been refreshed thanks to design agency Subplot. Market research discovered it was time for the 23-year-old beer company to rebrand.

Although research showed that beer drinkers enjoyed its brew, Okanagan’s logo and packaging were flat. It was a mixture of category clichés: an “old world” ribbon banner and crests on an oval label. As a result the beer label had no differentiating factors to help it stand out from the crowd on bottles on beer store shelves.
“There is an over-reliance on workmark-only logos and logo-centric packaging in the beer industry,” said Subplot principal and project designer Matthew Clark in a release statement.”
Enter Subplot and its radically new design. Its packaging concept for Okanagan illustrates the beer label’s new tagline Know Your Beer, educating drinkers on beer colour, serving temperatures and brew dates.
“We asked for a new logo and package”, says Okanagan Spring’s VP western region Bryce Zurowski. “What we got from Subplot was so much more: they gave us an entire way of thinking and talking about the brand.” Contact: www.subplot.com
