Going green key to paper industry’s success

TORONTO—Forest conservation organization Markets Initiative has released a report with environmental recommendations to help Canada’s ailing pulp and paper industry. Titled “Charting a New Course for North America’s Struggling Pulp and Paper Industries,” the report notes that the companies it works with — mainly printers, designers, and book, magazine and newspaper publishers — are asking for 550,000 tonnes of green paper, worth about $560 million, but no mills in Canada are positioned to supply it.

To change that, the report advocates for more collaboration among government, consumers and producers, and for new market and policy programs to increase recycled paper capacity, such as more de-inking facilities and improved waste collection.
