Toronto Star announces outsourcing plan
TORONTO—Last week the Toronto Star announced via an internal memo that it is planning “the biggest restructuring of the Star’s work in its history,” wrote publisher John Cruickshank.

This includes the outsourcing of some duties such as pagination and the design and layout of the paper’s advertisements, according to an article in The Globe And Mail. “We must find the best way to operate our business at the lowest possible cost, including contracting out non-core functions where there is a sound business case to do so,” wrote Cruickshank. It is not clear how many jobs this would affect in the art and production departments at the newspaper.

The Star also announced that it is offering severance packages to employees who choose to leave, according to The Globe. Workers would be given three weeks of severance for each year on the job, up to 85 weeks. Contact: Thestar.com, Globeandmail.com
