Amoeba launches branding makeover contest
TORONTO—Local design firm AmoebaCorp is launching the Brand New Branding Makeover Contest. Partnering with décor design company Umbra and The Production Kitchen, Amoeba will give away approximately $22,000 in design and strategic services to makeover the winning company’s brand. The winner will also receive a professional consultation and about $2,000 in products from Umbra and marketing materials printed by The Production Kitchen.

AmoebaCorp's new contest hopes to show the strength of great design

It is a chance, says co-creative director Mikey Richardson, for a company with great ideas but not a lot of money to get great branding,

Richardson says the contest, which closes February 28, is meant to showcase the importance of great design. “We see this as a charitable thing, helping someone out who can’t afford it in the first place,” he says. “Putting a positive word out on what design can do.”

A panel of design industry members will judge the entries based on the following criteria: innovation, sustainability, community impact, uniqueness, marketability and need.

“We’re looking to help a company that is interested in making a difference,” says Richardson. “That’s what we’re about and we’re looking for a company that is interested in doing the same thing.” Contact: Brandnewcontest.com, Amoebacorp.com, Umbra.com, Productionkitchen.com

Seems to me like Amoeba Corp is using this contest to win themselves awards. Does the client have a say in what their design will look like...or does Amoeba Corp have free reign to do whatever they want?

As with all of our projects, the client will play an integral role in our creative process. Not giving the client any say would be irresponsible. Our foremost goal is to create some good, useful, effective design for a business or organization that really needs it. Awards are nice to have, but are not (and never have been) our main objective as a company. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to contact me directly: mikey@amoebacorp.com

A contest for *professional* services is irresponsible ... ironically, Amoeba had quality brand and they just cheapened it with this ploy.

Are they having financial trouble? This appears to be a desperate attempt to find clients - they should rethink this campaign. It undermines our profession. What next? ... 50% off a logo design to the first 10 callers?

i dare amoeba to give away $22,000 in cash - if they could afford to do that, they would not be resorting to a contest/gimmick just to score new clients.

i wonder if Pentagram would ever do this ...

I wonder if the photo layout is supposed to be a clever attempt at illustrating how they're so super...
